Tools to install on a new Mac

Following is a short list of the most important tools I install on a new Mac: (in no certain order)

  • 1Password - obviously one of the most important tools. Being able to have all your passwords at your fingertip and generating new passwords on the fly is really important.
  • Firefox - my browser of choice with a lot of addons installed for adblocking, watching youtube, developer tools etc.
  • Alfred - quick app launcher
  • Sonos - controlling my home stereo system
  • Airmail - My E-Mail-client of choice with a lot of features (like disabling remote images, postpone,...)
  • Vmware Fusion - runs virtual machines and gives me a ready arch-linux if needed
  • TripMode - Allows me to disable access to the internet for certain apps on a "per WLAN"-basis, so you don't rake up a massive bill when on a metered connection
  • Little Snitch - application firewall that has fine-grained control over which connections go out to the network and a nice visualisation
  • Pock - Display the Dock in the Touch Bar

Terminal

  • iTerm2 - replacement for the regular Terminal with additional features
  • tmux - terminal multiplexer -allows me to have terminal sessions with a lot of plugins and personal setup. (plugins include tmux-resurrect)
  • Zsh (standard in Catalina) - replacement for the Bash-shell environment - in combination with oh-my-zsh
  • Vim - my text editor of choice (quitting it: ":q!") with a personal setup with a few plugins, e.g.: vim-fugitive for git, Nerdtree for filesystem-management, rust.vim and vim-rust-syntax-ext for rust support and a few more
  • mosh - SSH-like remote terminal with better support for spotty connections (keyboard predicions, maintaining sessions,...)

Setapp

  • Setapp - App subscription service that allows me to install more Apps (e.g. CleanMyMac - see below) - all below apps are available via Setapp
  • CleanMyMac - keep your mac clean and do regular system cleanup tasks
  • Timing - track time usage while on the Mac
  • Bartender - hiding unnecessary items in the Mac menubar
